Google Workspace users can now make ‘cloud-encrypted 1:1 video calls’ to other users through the Meet mobile app. Here's what we know.Space

Make Direct Calls with Google Meet – No Links Required!

Google now allows its Workspace users to forward direct 1:1 calls. Until now, Workspace users had to create a meeting link before the actual meeting, which was then shared as a calendar invitation via email or chat. But now users can make “cloud-encrypted 1:1 video calls” to other users through the Meet mobile app.

“Now you can make a Meet call with your mobile app directly to a colleague and call their mobile device,” Google said in an updated blog post. During the call itself, Workspace users can access Meet features such as in-meeting chat, virtual backgrounds, visual effects, real-time captioning, and more, depending on the Workspace version.

Google further said that this feature would be enabled by default and “can only be disabled by removing Meet meetings and calls from your organization.”

It’s also worth noting that Meet calls don’t have Google Duo’s “old call features” like group calls, messages, moments, family mode, and knocking. However, these features are still available to users who do not upgrade to the new version of the app.

When will it be released, availability

Google says this update is available to all Workspace users. It has already started for iOS users on November 2 and will start for Android users from November 14 onwards. Also, this is said to be an “extended rollout,” which means it could take up to 15 days for the feature to appear.
